Surprising pineapple recipes: Elevate your drinks, smoothies, and more!

When you think of pineapples, the juicy and sweet flesh is what likely comes to mind. But did you know that the often-overlooked parts – the skin and core – hold their own hidden treasures? Today, we'll explore some creative and delicious ways to make the most of every part of this tropical fruit, adding bursts of flavor to your salads and drinks while also reducing waste.

1. Pineapple skin tea: A sip of refreshment with health benefits

Pineapple skin might seem tough, but it's packed with nutrients and flavor. One primary nutrient is bromelain, a natural enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties. Transform your pineapple skins into a delicious, refreshing and healthy tea.

This tea is highly adaptable, so embrace your creativity! Here’s how I generally make it:

  • Wash the pineapple skin thoroughly to remove any dirt, bacteria and pesticides. I typically soak mine in vinegar for 20-30 minutes.

  • Cut the skin into small pieces and place them in a pot with the pineapple core (optional), water and two cinnamon sticks.

  • Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer for about 30-60 minutes to extract the flavors and nutrients.

  • Strain the tea into a cup and sweeten with a natural sweetener like honey or agave, if desired.

  • Sip and savor this unique tea hot or cold.

Note: Pineapple skins and cores can be collected over time and stored in the freezer for larger batches of tea.

2. Pineapple core smoothies: Waste less, enjoy more

The tough core of the pineapple is often discarded, but it can add a wonderful twist to smoothies. Instead of tossing it away, include the pineapple core in your favorite smoothie recipes by either adding pieces directly or boiling and pureeing them first. The core adds a subtle sweetness and a hint of tropical flavor, making your smoothies even more delightful.

3. Grated pineapple core: Elevate your salad game

Elevate your salads with the exotic and tangy taste of grated pineapple! Instead of simply tossing the skin away, grab a grater and grate the pineapple skin into your salads. It adds a burst of tropical goodness and a touch of sweetness to your greens. You'll be amazed at how this simple addition can take your salads to a whole new level!

4. Pineapple core ice cubes: Fun and flavorful cocktails

Say goodbye to wasting the tough pineapple core and hello to a fun addition to your cocktails and drinks. Instead of tossing it away, cut the

pineapple core into small pieces and freeze them. These frozen pineapple core cubes can be added to cocktails and drinks as flavorful ice cubes that infuse your beverages with a hint of tropical taste.

5. DIY Pineapple enzyme cleaner

Harness the power of pineapple enzymes to create your own natural and eco-friendly cleaner. Pineapple enzyme cleaner is effective in breaking down grease and stains and leaves your surfaces sparkling clean. It's a safe and non-toxic alternative to chemical-laden cleaners and a fantastic way to utilize every part of this tropical fruit.

6. Composting champions

If you still find yourself with pineapple scraps that can't be used, add them to your compost bin. They will naturally break down and enrich the soil with valuable nutrients. Composting is a small act with a big impact on reducing waste and supporting the environment.
